Ozone healing

9/27/2010

Now and again we get some good news about reversing environmental damage.  This week scientists with the Vienna Convention for the Protection of the Ozone Layer and the Montreal Protocol report that the ozone 'hole' is recovering, and more quickly than expected.  The report confirms that the ozone layer is no longer depleting and should regain its density by 2048.  This appears to be a direct result of the global agreement through the Montreal Protocol to phase out the use of chlorofluorocarbons and other ozone-depleting compounds.

The report is the first in four years to update us on progress of slowing and even reversing damage to the ozone layer.  It's exciting to see that a concerted world-wide effort like this can yield results.   May we all keep up the good work on this, and take encouragement to tackle other world-wide problems.
